Staying Hydrated at Work

When you're preoccupied with many different tasks and responsibilities at work, it's difficult to remember to keep hydrated. However, staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your body, as water helps to regulate your internal temperature, remove metabolic wastes, lubricate your joints, and keep your heart and muscles healthy. Studies have shown that those who maintain good hydration have improved alertness, better concentration, and overall enhanced cognitive performance compared with those who are dehydrated; this can also offset potential safety risks, in particular when driving a vehicle.

Practicable Things You Can Do
  • Take plenty of fluids to work especially if working remotely.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, ideally water (if not a fan infuse it with a flavoured juice)
  • Snack on fruit and veggies, drinking fluids is not the only way to hydrate, about 20% of our daily liquids can come from fruits and vegetables + additional health benefits.
  • Keep cool where possible, utilise windows and air con.
  • Drink sips of fluid continuously throughout the day.
  • Drink more if you exercise in the evenings.
Things to Avoid
  • Avoid dehydrating foods and drinks such as sweetened drinks, processed foods etc. Drinking full sugar drinks may sound refreshing but will leave your body even more hydrated than before. Sugar requires a lot of water for breakdown and metabolism.
  • Alcohol is prohibited in the workplace, but where possible avoid it the night before you work as this will cause dehydration the following day.
